What it is
The ceremonial start is the one with the crowds, the bibs, and the teams leaving downtown Anchorage. The competitive restart is usually the next day, farther north, and some years the race has started in Fairbanks when trail conditions demanded it. You can walk Fourth Avenue any other month and still read the history.
Before you go
Arrive early for a spot near the chute. The dogs are working. Do not crowd them for a photo.
