What it is
Wrangell-St. Elias is the park that makes the others look small. Kennecott is the red mill complex above the Kennicott Glacier, reached by the rough McCarthy Road and a footbridge. The Root Glacier trail is the hike once you are there. This is a multi-day detour from the highway system, and that is why it still feels remote.
Before you go
The road eats tires. Services in McCarthy are limited. Book a bed before you drive out.
