What it is
Matanuska Glacier, beside the Glenn Highway, is the easy-to-reach trek from Anchorage. Exit Glacier has approaches on foot. Mendenhall and other Southeast glaciers have their own guided walks. You do not need to have used crampons before. You do need a guide on the ice itself. The surface changes every season.
Before you go
Book a guided trip. Sturdy boots. The blue pools are colder and deeper than they look.
