What it is
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center sits at Mile 79 of the Seward Highway in Portage Valley. It is a sanctuary, not a zoo you rush. The habitats are large, the mountains sit right behind them, and it works on a rainy day when a boat trip is cancelled. Give it more than a half hour.
Before you go
About 45 minutes south of Anchorage. Check hours in winter. Pets stay in the car.
